FLOOD DISASTER IN ORISSA
To me the Balashram is like a miracle. I remember
well the green fields and rice paddies.
The flood disaster in Orissa ha left a
path of destruction
.
Millions of people are fleeing from the flood, hundreds
of villages have been washed away and most
of the roads are destroyed. It is said
to be the worst flood for 50 years.
Since most of the projects which are supported by Hand
in Hand are located in Orissa, we kept in contact
with our partner organisation, Prajnana Mission,
right from the beginning of this catastrophe. Their helpers instantly organized Flood
Camps in the most devastated regions where they
provided dried food, potable water and medicine to the
flood victims. Moreover, sick and injured people have
been taken care of by the doctors of Prajnana Mission.
Nearly
40,000 flood
victims
have been looked after until now!
To prevent the feared outbreak of severe disease in the coming
weeks, the number of Relief Camps will be
increased. As the drinking water in the affected regions
is contaminated, it is necessary to distribute large quantities
of water purification tablets, antibiotics and anti‑diarrhoea
medicine. Additional doctors have to be
engaged to manage the huge influx of patients. Also
many farm and domestic animals have suffered
in this disaster. For them, veterinary camps will also be
organized.
We kindly ask you
for your immense support in the challenging days and
weeks ahead!
